1000 Stories Zinfandel, Bourbon Barrel Aged, California, 2016 - 750 Millilitre , $18.99

Small batch No. 041. Years ago, when I was just starting out as a winemaker, it was almost unheard of to get French oak wine barrels and American oak barrels were for whiskey not wine. But we still needed barrels to age our wine, so we purchased new and used bourbon barrels. Today, American and French oak wine barrels are commonplace, so the inspiration for 1000 Stories is a nod to the way things were. We've selected new and used bourbon barrels for these small batches of Zinfandel, which impart characteristics specific to these barrels: charred vanilla, dried herbs and a hint of caramel. - Bob Blue, Winemaker. Alc. 15.7% by vol. Vinted and Bottled by 1000 Stories Vineyards, Hopland, Mendocino County, California.

By Gnarly Head. 1924 - The heart of prohibition and the year our winery first planted vineyards in California. During an era of gangsters and speakeasies, Americans would not be denied their favorite beverages. Daring drinkers sipped wine on the sly and found a loophole allowing doctors to prescribe Bourbon. In honor of that bold time, two once-forbidden favorites come together to inspire our 1924 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted with full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Bourbon barrels, this liberal wine is layered with suggestions of blackberry, fig and warm spice with notes reminiscent of Bourbon: caramel, brown sugar and toasted oak.
